Pope Francis chose his papal name to honor Saint Francis of Assisi who lived 800 years ago in the middle of beautiful Italy. Assisi, who was born wealthy and gave it all away, is the Patron Saint of the environment and animals. This background provides context for the Pope’s October 2023 announcement on the urgency of addressing the climate crisis.
“Laudate Deum” is the Pope’s proclamation “to all people of goodwill on the climate crisis” to protect Earth. “Our care for one another and our care for the earth are intimately bound together,” the Pope said.
Physicians and nurses know providing healthcare is connected to Earth. The food we eat, the medicine we take is from Earth. Providing care creates pollution, trash, chemical waste, emits harmful gases, burns fossil fuels and uses too many single use supplies. Plastic waste is also a huge problem. The good news is there are hundreds of projects and a compelling business case to solve healthcare’s pollution and waste problem.
I am one of 1.4 billion Catholics. Thank you, Pope Francis, for your challenge.
