Pope Francis chose his papal name to honor Saint Francis of Assisi who lived 800 years ago in the middle of beautiful Italy. Assisi, who was born wealthy and gave it all away, is the Patron Saint of the environment and animals. This background provides context for the Pope’s October 2023 announcement on the urgency of addressing the climate crisis.
“Laudate Deum” is the proclamation by Pope Francis “to all people of goodwill on the climate crisis” to take action to protect our common home, Earth, because “our care for one another and our care for the earth are intimately bound together”.
It is no surprise to physicians, nurses and managers that health care is directly connected to earth. The food we eat, the medicine we take is from Earth. We know the act of providing care makes pollution, trash, chemical waste, emits harmful gases, burns fossil fuels and uses too many single use supplies. The good news is there are hundreds of projects and a compelling business case to solve healthcare’s pollution and waste problem.
